Do The British Really Like Warm Beer?
Categories: myths and folkloreOne of the first things my now brother-in-law offered when we first met was to warm up a beer for me as all his were ‘unfortunately’ chilled.
I naturally declined because, opposed to popular myth, the English do not, and never have had, any kind of a penchant for warm beer! When I say ‘declined’, I mean I declined the warming, not the beer of course…I am British after all!
Now, how this cultural myth became so widespread is anyone’s guess but to set the record straight, the British and European’s in general, have no interest in drinking their beer warm and so far as I can tell, never have done.
The mistake probably comes through the misunderstanding of the term ‘room temperature’ which is the degree to which many of the best British beers are served.
Room temperature beers are the norm in many British pubs but only where the beer in question is best served at that temperature. Budweiser or any other lager is not going to be served at room temperature anywhere in the British isles, whereas a real Britsh ale or bitter might be because that’s where the flavour is best…there’s a difference.
But isn’t ‘room temperature’ just another way of saying ‘warm’? Umm, well no, because you see, the ‘room’ in this case is a decidely cool beer cellar which typically keeps beer cooled to around 55 Fahrenheit. Cellar temperature beer is not warm by any standards.

yes indeed, i was explaining again (I’ve lost count) about room temperature as opposed to warm beer, and lo and behold, here’s your site (found via yorkshire puddings via sunday dinner via mushy peas…)thanks….been here 26 years….my mother in Blighty is sending me a care package next week that will include marmite, colman’s mustard powder, allsorts and tea bags, although i have my sources over here) look forward to reading more…..a good joke i like to pull is telling Americans I hope to be Governor of New England when Charles is king and wants to reclaim the colonies, and that we’ve been coming over here to infiltrate ready for the second revolution…they have limited sense of irony or ‘dry English humour’ in many cases…. cheers for now, ron

Oh, for crying out loud…
I am so terribly sick of the stereotypes that widely exist here.
We all have bad teeth from eating all the boiled food and drinking warm beer.
Yet, if I even suggest that Americans suffer from obesity and mass consumption, they get terribly offended.
Don’t even start me on the attempts at imitating my accent!
“Cheerio!” “Tea and crumpets!” “Wanker!” are among the most popular phrases.
What’s worse is that where I live in the states (Naples, FL) there’s a fairly large English contingency, and those I’ve met are the most un-English people I’ve had the misfortune to encounter.
And I’ve only been here five and a half years…
I do like the comments Ron made. I may have to adopt that tack for myself… lol
