OK, I knew you were going to think that was dumb but its true and you can buy banana hangers for the kitchen or dining room to increase the longevity of a bunch of bananas by a few days.
The science behind this is pretty simple and explains how these simple metal or wooden banana holders work. Basically, when you lay a bunch of bananas on the table or kitchen counter they get bunched together which doesn’t allow the air to flow freely around them. They are also pressing against each other and against the table top which helps bruise the fruit as its like having a constant pressure applied. If you check out your bananas they probably ripen more quickly in the areas which are touching the surface of your fruit bowl or from where they are pressed against each other.
Allowing air to flow around each finger of fruit allows them to ripen more evenly so you do not get those ugly brown spot or squishy black areas affecting the fruit inside. You can buy banana hooks which fit under a kitchen cabinet but banana hangers and holders are a more attractive and decorative way to acheive the same effect without having to drill something into your kitchen cabinetry. Some people prefer banana hooks, but I’m more of a fan of the other type.
